I have been to Turkey. My favorite writer (Lawrence Osborne) lives in Turkey and was just saying last night that the snowfall there made it look like a fairytale. They have McDonalds, for crying out loud! It could be a European city except it has better spice markets.
Perry predictably says we should cut off foreign aid to Turkey.
"Obviously, when you have a country that is being ruled by what many would perceive to be Islamic terrorists, when you start seeing that type of activity against their own citizens," Perry responding to a question about the rise in violence against women in Tureky. "Then yes, not only is it time for us to have a conversation about whether or not they belong to be in NATO, but it's time for the United States, when we look at their foreign aid, to go to zero with it".
Idiot. In Republican debates, it's a contest for who can be the biggest racist, homophobe, sexist - and they're preaching to the converted. It looks embarrassing when this appears in the world press, and when it's realized that one of these nut cases could be the next GW Bush.
Turkey lashed out at Perry earlier Tuesday, saying his comments were "baseless and improper", and adding that "the unfortunate views of Perry are not shared in any case by Republican party supporters, considering the weak support he has received in public polls and primary elections."
It's good that they realize this - we do not need him already causing international incidents.
