NPR covered this too. Apparently the Schuller family had some infighting going on, the ways of the church did not keep with modern times, and there were very high overheads - professional musicians, limos etc.

I remember coming around the corner from Disneyland one year (when attending the American Speech & Hearing Convention in Anaheim) and driving straight into the parking lot of the Crystal Cathedral just as church was letting out.
