Godrej and Boyce: World's last typewriter factory closes its doors in Mumbai | Mail Online
There are only 200 typewriters left and only a couple are in English - the rest are in Arabic.
I remember taking typing and advanced typing in high school. I won a state contest by typing 200 wpm! Shell Oil hired me because I could type so fast (billing clerk.) In college, I participated in a rent-to-own progam and typed all my papers by hand. I used to be a secretary for a Civil Engineer who made me type form letters by hand and correct all errors with white-out fluid. Eventually, I was able to use an IBM selectric, and then finally "Word" on a cumbersome PC (dissertation.)
Word? Are you sure it wasn't WordStar or Word Perfect? I don't believe that Word was available back when you disseratated. Remember using the crude line editor on the PDP-11? That was painful.

I think it was WordStar. I used the PDP-11 in the old building too and had to go into another room and boot it up in octal code when it crashed. The "monitor" was an oscilloscope so everything white would look pink after the color receptors shifted in my eyes. There was no cursor - you had to "infer" where it was.
