
Survey: Americans Are Pretty Ignorant When It Comes To Religion | Mediaite
Is this part of the general "dumbing down?" Is it any wonder many think the President is a Muslim? A majority of Americans polled couldn't identify Martin Luther as the force behind the Protestant Reformation. Four in ten Catholics had a dim understanding of the use of bread and wine in ritual. Mormons and Evangelicals scored the highest.
Atheists, agnostics and Jews knew the most about other religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. This makes sense in a way, as some may be less tied to one sort of religious idea and others may have had quite a bit of religious training and made a decision to leave a certain faith.
Many knew teachers were not supposed to lead students in prayer but they were unaware that teachers can teach about religion. The information came from a Pew poll and was reported this morning in major newspapers.
