We reported how the US company Trijicon had a multi-million dollar contract for military guns and had been putting Biblical scripture in the gun sights. Some US officers call the guns "spiritually transformed firearms of Jesus Christ," as though they are Communion items or similar to my blessed Kwan Yin Buddhist charm.
Australia had purchased such guns for their military and quickly removed the references. This raises questions over the connection between religion and violence. At the link above, an Australian church leader writes of being appaled at this distortion of Christianity. He cites Gandhi, who said, "Jesus Christ is the most perfect example of non-violence in history, and the only people who don't realize this are Christians."
For the first 300 years, Christians refused to bear arms even in the military. Emperor Constantine superimposed the "just war" theory onto the basic belief in the 4th Century, to justify his plundering.More teachings of Jesus:
''Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.''
''Put down your sword; those who live by the sword die by the sword.''
''If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also.''
Refusing to defend himself with violence when his accusers come to arrest him, Jesus goes so far as forgiving those who kill him.
The church leader also cites his friend who says, ''killing for Jesus makes about as much sense as shagging for celibacy.''
