Scientology Convicted of Fraud in France; Prominent Celebrities Leave Due to Anti-Gay Position of Church

The French branch of the Church of Scientology was fined nearly $900,000 on Tuesday by a Paris court for fraud. story here  The American IRS considers Scientology a religion, but the French equivalent does not.  It is considered a sect there (cult.)  Former members sued, saying they were pushed into paying large sums of money for expensive courses and equipment.  One woman spent more than $30,000.  A spokeswoman for Scientology called the imposition of the fine an "Inquisition."

Prominent Hollywood people quitting because of "gays" position - "Crash" Director Paul Haggis is just one, quitting after 32 years.  (Tom Cruise and John Travolta are other high-profile members.)  Haggis was stunned when the San Diego branch of Scientology supported Prop 8, which took away marriage rights for CA's gay couples.
