Wingnuts Bangup Day: Palin, Gingrich, O'Reilly, Joe the "Plumber," Norm Coleman

This is nice to come home to. Palin was disinvited to a Republican fundraiser in favor of Newt Gingrich. 

Bill O'Reilly refuses to travel in Spain anymore - he is not impressed with Zapatero the Socialist or Spain's policy on terrorism. He spouts the usual wingnut talking points, and even brings up his problems with France.  

People in Pittsburg are reading about Joe the Plumber trying to extend his fifteen minutes of fame and you can too. He was to appear at the Raddison to oppose the Employee Free Choice Act. Union plumbers gathered to denounce him. Mr. Joe would love to see plumbers not be able to organize their labor. One plumber said that "Joe the Imposter" would be a better label, since "Joe the Plumber" is not in fact licensed. The issue has, for all practical purposes, already been decided in the Senate. 

Norm Coleman may be SOL as a new ruling allows ballot counting that may make it virtually impossible for him to win, appeal or not.

Meanwhile, in liberal land, Michael Moore is lurking around Washington DC gathering info for his next movie and the Obamas are getting photo ops with their overseas visit.

"French Eminem" Criticized for Sexist Lyrics

Rap is currently big in France and the rightwing typically doesn't appreciate it. Sarko went to court to take on songs he felt insulted police. In 2007, Monsieur R offended a center right MP by calling France a "slut" and vowing to "piss" on Napoleno and de Gaulle. Now parties unite to ban a sexist song by Orelsan, the rural rapper dubbed also the "French Eminem." He has also been compared to "The Streets" - from the UK because he is neither minority nor urban. The song in question is called Sale Pute (Dirty Slut) and it is about beating up a girlfriend caught cheating. He may be banned from one of France's biggest festivals, Le Printemps de Bourges. As in our own country, there is ACTUAL violence against women going on, and it is felt that he glorifies it. 

YouTube was asked to remove the video and it is not the one we will show. He once said "Eminem is much more hardcore than me, I would never insult my mother." He further said he was a mysogynist and would not hit a woman (as his song advocates doing.) He also points out that he's less hardcore than a popular French tv series where a guy is bumped off after five minutes for no reason.

 

The French Are More Apt to Take Up Pitchforks than the Americans

Sarkozy threatens to walk away from the G20 if there isn't more international regulation of the financial markets and blames the crisis on "les Anglo Saxons" - the "populist rage" in France seems more intense than here. Newsweek may do a headline story on it, but what people in America seem to do is 1) bitch, 2) sign petitions and 3) threaten to write their Congressperson. We also celebrate Labor Day separately from the rest of the world, and without much recognition of the actual connection with "labor," but more as a day to kick back with a slightly longer weekend.  (Workers from Mexico will be a massive exception, come May 1st!)

Recently we noticed that the French take matters into their own hands. First they participate in large work stoppages which bring the country to a halt - any time their benefit packages are threatened with reduction, let alone if they might have transfers or layoffs. Then if they're pissed at a CEO, they surround his office and take him hostage, first done at SONY then at 3M and Caterpillar.

KKK Alive & Well in Alabama in 2009

The Independent in the UK had an article about the KKK in 2009 in Alabama. The photographer infiltrated and produced some amazing images, like this wedding. (slideshow at the link - amazing work)

 

The account also says the group's influence is dwindling, and in fact, reactionary racist and backward-thinking groups often flare up when social progress is made - in US, in Europe, anywhere there are people. 

I did also recall our story about the days when the KKK was huge in the Pacific NW and operated out of Belltown in Seattle, as well as being very big in the Bellingham area and other parts of the state.

LA Times: Take the Rush Limbaugh Challenge

The LA Times has faced numerous budget cuts, and the quality of that distinguished paper appears to be taking a hit.  In an opinion piece, Andrew Klavan, the author of this dribble, is asking liberals to listen to Limbaugh because what they really know about him has been taken out of context by the liberal media. Klavan writes "I listen to Limbaugh every chance I get, and I have never heard the man utter a single racist, hateful or stupid word."

Yea, right. I searched for Limbaugh's "racist quotes."  I found these 10:

1. I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.

Okay Rush, slavery was not a good things for the millions of African Americans who were enslaved, raped and beaten. The streets weren’t at all safe for African Americans. Slavery not a bad thing? Someone should put Rush on a plantation for him to see how great it is. Keep on fear and race mongering Rush, you might get to Goebels status.

2. You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.

Martin Luther King is a national hero, not a black hero. Everybody in the United States celebrates his birthday, children are taught to look up to him as a hero in school. He’s earned the respect and admiration of the world and you believe the man who killed him was a hero? This is beyond racist. This is evil, mean spirited, subhuman. Praising the assassin of one of our great American heroes is beyond the scope of regular racism.

3. Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?

No but I’ve noticed that all racist bigots think like Rush Limbaugh. Comparing a respected black politician and minister to common criminals is Jim Crow racism. Maybe all black people look alike to him, but I’ve never seen a picture of a wanted criminal that looks like Jesse Jackson. A serial killer that looks like Rush Limbaugh on the other hand.

So-called conservative writers seem to short on facts these days.  Does Mr. Klavan's piece represent  incompetence or lies?  Or does his statement about what he has heard personally let him off the hook?

How hard would it be to find hateful and stupid things that Rush has said?  I would say these quotes qualify for those categories as well.  I'll leave it to you to find more.
