One of our inspirations, 90 years old, he's taken a fall. He always carries a copy of the Constitution. He turns down invitations from other senators to go deep sea fishing or golfing. He has never played a game of cards or tennis. He prefers work. He's been in the Senate for 48 years, longer even than Strom Thurmond had. He uses two canes. He misses his wife. An 8th term would bring him to 95. He says age only affects his legs, and that his head hasn't changed in 25 years. He grew up son of a coal miner in a house without electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. Before he entered politics, he was a fiddle-playing butcher. He has a memoir called "Child of the Appalachian Coalfields.
He once joined the Ku Klux Klan, but I was once the Betty Crocker Homemaker of the year. Senator Byrd cites Roman history, quotes the Bible and reads poetry in his Senate speeches. He's known for directing alot of tax money to his state, but also for vigorous and vocal early and continuing opposition to the Iraq war. In this, he was prescient, compared to Kerry, Clinton, Reid etc.
okay fess up what about this Betty Crocker homemaker of the year
