Paris Hilton Reports To The Big House

from NYT blog

Paris Hilton, the hotel heiress everyone loves to hate and obsessively follow, surrendered to authorities last night, beginning a three-week stay at Century Regional Detention Facility just outside of Los Angeles.

That was hours after she appeared at the MTV Movie Awards, where The Los Angeles Times reports that the crowd at the “relentlessly sour” show at one point “lustily cheered the proposal that she should be sent off to jail early.” The newspaper said she almost cried at what was one of many jokes at her expense.

And you thought Miss USA had it bad.

‘’I'm really scared but I’m ready to do this,'’ she told reporters. ‘’And I hope that I’m an example to other young people.'’

According to The Associated Press, she’ll be staying in the “special needs” section of the all-female facility jail, separated from the general population but possibly sharing a cell with one other person. She’ll be allowed to leave the 12-by-8 foot room for at least an hour a day to shower, watch TV, take a stroll in the yard or make phone calls.

If that doesn’t seem like that impressive of a sacrifice, Ms. Hilton said that she passed on the option to do the time in a “pay jail,” according to The A.P.

“I’m going to do the time, I’m going to do it the right way,” she said.

She may feel up to the challenge because she has been showered with so much advice and support from a mind-bogglingly odd array of sources, including a hard-up half sister and an ad hoc committee of concerned celebrities rounded out by at least one fictional character.

Her mother’s half-sister in Rhode Island offered to play “a supportive role” during an interview with The New York Post conducted “in a seedy parking lot holding a red cup and reeking of booze as potential johns milled about.” Elizabeth Avanzino has served time, too, and didn’t pass up on a chance to argue how similar they really are.

“Addiction is addiction, whether it’s alcohol or speeding,” she said. “It runs in the blood, it really does.”

The list included two people who play police officers on TV. Wendi McLendon Covey of Reno 911 stayed in character for her bit; Ice T of Law and Order did not.

A ban on tweezers and the possibly resulting unibrow — a chief concern of the Reno 911 cop — was solved by an inmate at Arizona’s Tent City prison.

“We use string,” said Denis Mendez, one of several inmates with highly-sculpted brows in an AZCentral video.

Patty Hearst, who served seven years for bank robbery in the 1970’s, was not among Ms. Hilton’s advisers, a piece of information that became available an official statement saying so.

Ms. Hearst referred Ms. Hilton to open letter from the mother of a former star of Beverly Hills 90120. Candy Spelling urged Ms. Hilton to “add more to her community than establishing new definitions for infamy.”

The former Hollywood madam and current Laundromat manager was far more comforting, telling Ms. Hilton that time flies in the clink (she was sentenced to 21 months for tax evasion).

“When she wakes up it will be over,” she said.
