I remember on Tax Day 2003 when Michael Moore sang all the verses to "Oh Canada" when he appeared at Shoreline Community College, WA. They had refused to send troops to Iraq.
Last weekend we took a ferry trip to Victoria BC, the provincial capital. In the basement of the stately old Empress Hotel, we saw that the Department of Defence (Canadian spelling) was meeting. I could see some ominous looking suits inside.
We found the expected touristic stereotypes, but also some alternative areas where we saw evidence that the antiwar spirit was alive. Canada may not be involved in Iraq, but certainly is pulling weight in Afghanistan.
Nice to know that even in Victoria, a city that supposedly is as stiff-upper-lip British as it gets, there is a vibrant alternative scene.
Looking forward to two Canadian trips this year myself - though one will take me to Calgary, the Conservative stronghold, as I head for Banff and Jasper National Parks.
