At this juncture I think what we are going to see from here on in is a complete fracturing of the Republican Party, spear-headed by Palin and her die hard supporters such as Hannity, Limbaugh, etc, etc, et al.

They, the True Conservatives, are going to splinter off and form their own Conservative Party. All their rhetoric on AM radio and in the blogosphere has been trending in that direction, for years now, and Peggy's little Declarations of War on Palin might be the thing that gets the ball really rolling towards that.

Here's the thing.

In a 3 way race, if things get bad enough, and stay bad by late 2012, a rabble rouser like Palin could easily beat a sitting Incumbent.

Especially if she has the full weight of the Media Apparatus that Murdoch built behind her.

Do not misunderstimate her, or the Power Mad people behind her.

Remember - the upside-down flag means distress and we have seen it often at antiwar rallies.  It's patriotic in a way, and describes a certain reality, as does the corporate flag.

On May 4, 1970 members of the Ohio National Guard killed four students and wounded nine others at Kent State University. Some of the students were protesting the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. Others in the line of fire were just seeing what was going on, or walking to their classes. 

Yesterday, a young woman who was part of the crowd in Tehran, either protesting or simply watching the events unfold, was shot in the chest, apparently by Iranian Basiji security forces on rooftops.  Her death was recorded on video, and the gruesome end of her life sped digitally and virally around the world on social media sites, such as YouTube and Facebook.   "Neda," as she was known, has in a matter of hours become an icon for the Iranian protest movement.  Read more at WorldWatch

I've a pair of Designer Horned Rimmed, Uber Geek/Nerd, Eyeglasses, that I call my 'Al Franken Glasses', that I've been a puttin' of wearing, in pretty much the same way anyone reasonable person waits to pop the cork on a finely aged bottle of bubbly for a moment of Well Earned Celebration, until somebody, (ahem, cough, cough cough), gets Rightfully Seated.

Well I'm wearing them right now because today we are all John Hodgman.

Normally don't like to make fun of names of heads of state, but Rhandi Rhodes did it.  I've been looking at imagery on the internet, and am seeing references to Ahmadinejad as the "Iranian George Bush."  The internet is filling up with imagery of protests and repression, despite a crackdown.  Unpopular leaders (and each leader is usually unpopular with some faction) are depicted in cartoons and Photoshop jobs and, like Jong-Il Kim, Ahmadinejad is not a new fixation.   These come from mockingwords blog.

Also if he's unpopular with the American right then any enemy of my friend should be my friend, but not necessarily.   On the other hand, that he is a vicious dictator who steals elections probably (and sometimes also says things that are true and make sense) does not make it necessarily follow that his opponent is not corrupt.  Neither candidate would champion separation of church and state, but that can be said of some of our candidates here.  Women and youth especially those in cities and more educated did not want this guy and I am seeing comments relating to how those favoring Obama would have felt if the Republicans had stolen a third election.  The imagery of the left will focus more on human rights and less on xenophobia.

The above "Hitler" shot comes from an Iranian-in-English blog.  Any disliked leader can be depicted as Hitler, and we've seen it done with both Bush and Obama, depending on the eye of the creator of the image and who is to behold it.  Such sites run the gamut from reformists who favor a more modern, secular, open state to those taking a seat on the Israel vs Iran fence.

This blogger claims to be a "twisted conservative" and his latest post is called "Liberals suck."  Showing Ahmadinejad in undershorts next to Chavez is a common type of insult.  It's not so different than those people who used to put Clinton and Gore in gay leatherman suits or show Bush kissing Saddam.

Some of the images come from sites that are are ultra-conservative (whether orthodox Jewish, fundamentalist Christians of the "Ann" Coulter type, or wingnuts preoccupied with their favorite armchair fixation, war.) Putting Bin Laden in a photo is always an extra adrenalin jolt, as he has alot of "icon" points (is very familiar.)  The Swift Boat guys used to do that alot to make liberals look "weak" etc.  It's pretty ridiculous here because people really ought to know that the Persians and the Arabs did more fighting throughout history than uniting!

This one is from the right again, with their usual anti-Darwinian fixation-on-apes racism and more homophobia which makes one wonder why they are so preoccupied.  Insulting one's mother is a further insult and combines incest, bestiality and homophobia.  The seven guys who contribute to the anti-Ahmedinejad site are American arch-conservatives similar to many of those who have anti-Obama sites (and I must admit some of the anti-Bush sites on the left were about as primitive).  

For historical context, I can't help but wonder what would have happened had our CIA not helped overthrow Massedeq in favor of the Shah.  Things would have been different, but one thing that would not have stopped would have been the making of homemade propaganda.  Only now there is the internet (& other technology that was not available in 1979) - we do not know but what we are watching the process of a coup.  For those who remember, it all looks very familiar.
