DEVO did two consecutive nights at the Moore Theater in Seattle. The first night, they did all of "Are We Not Men," and the second night they did all of "Freedom of Choice." They did the songs in the order in which they appear on the album, so a skinny guy in tighty whitey undies kept coming out with big signs with numbers on.
They opened with "Whip It"(wrong! see comment below - it was third) and closed with "It's a Beautiful World." That's the longest video (at the end) and Boogie Boy not only sings but makes a commentary on Hollywood and Michael Jackson. ("I know that if Michael Jackson could come up on stage with us right now, he would say 'It's a Beautiful World'".)
When we arrived, we went to the basement bar and sat with people who had VIP tickets so were able to meet DEVO afterward and get their CDs autographed. Outside the theater, I saw people with the red planter hats and then when we got inside, they were everywhere! Amazingly fast-paced concert and takes me back to their 1980 Showbox concert here!
The former incarnation of the "Lusty Lady was "The Amusement Center" and was located up the street nearer the Pike Market. The then-manager June Cade said that such places do well in times of conservatism. I'm wondering how they doing in times of recession? The boutique next door had marked everything down by half and appeared to be going out of business. "Lusty Lady" is in the habit of satirizing the signs on the Seattle Art Museum across the street, but this time they echoed the sign next door.
Steves is the real deal, says Doug Tarnapol of RI. We know that here in Seattle, as Rick hails from nearby Edmonds, so always glad to see him appreciated elsewhere!
Spending four months a year overseas, Rick Steves believes that thoughtful travel can expand our world view and shape how we address the political challenges that confront our country. This popular speaker returns to The Commonwealth Club to provide a unique perspective on how the other 96 percent of humanity views our country and why we should "challenge truths we were raised to think were self-evident" in order to become citizens of the planet.
Including NPR. All I heard was how two Republican governships mean the wingnuts are quickly going to be back in power. Why did they interview Michael Steele and the head of the Club for Growth?!
& that was just my commute. Here is the Daily Kos link.
Here's Mudhoney and Dow Constantine, our new King County Executive who replaced Ron Sims, who went to DC to work with Obama.
Here is some good stuff from FUSE.
In approving R-71, Washington voted to protect all of its families equally, rejecting a No campaign that appealed to fear and bigotry. Voters responded positively to an incredible grassroots effort and a simple appeal to fairness. The Secretary of State and all the geeked-out models set up by the smart people we know say that last night's 51%-49% margin will continue to grow.
Common Sense vs. Eymanism
Tim Eyman hit the ropes hard with a 55%-45% (and growing) smackdown for I-1033 -- his second consecutive landslide defeat. People looked at a future minus more than $8 billion in funding for education, healthcare and public services and just said No. I-1033 lost throughout Washington (58% No in Adams County). No word on how Eyman sugar daddy Mike Dunmire feels about the return on his investment in recent years. He typically bankrolls Eyman to the tune of $250k-$500k per initiative, weighing in at $300k on this one.
Progressive Leadership vs Conservative Subterfuge
King County voters chose a tested progressive champion -- Dow Constantine -- for King County Executive. They saw through conservative TV personality Susan Hutchison's lightweight resume and systematic efforts to hide her right wing values and party affiliation and recognized that running the 14th largest county in the nation requires substantive experience. Hutchison's early lead evaporated into a 14-point triumph for Dow.
Seattle PI blog reports that Seattle has more bookstores per capita than any city in the US. We are known as a geeky book town. Unfortunately Bailey/Coy Books is quitting at the end of the month and so is Elliott Bay Book Store. Amazon, on the one hand, is local and booming because of its on-line business, whereas Barnes and Noble has seen some decline. Many of us have tried our hardest to support the indie book stores (as with coffee houses.) It's depressing to see this happen - many memories at both B/C and EBay (the real one.)
Here is the percent vote for Obama if "White men" are removed entirely. Raises interesting questions, as there was a time in this country not so long ago when minorities and women did not vote, ONLY white men.
