High school cross-dressing in the spotlight | Fresh Loaf
High Schools Struggle When Gender Bends the Dress Code - NYTimes.com Ronald Reagan Jr. was talking about this trend on Air America. Ron used to be a ballet dancer, not the most masculine profession, and his father was a political conservative who used to be a cowboy actor. That alone gives Ron's commentary context. Young people also have role models like the somewhat androgynous Rachel Maddow, the not-a-businessman Michael Moore, the non-dorky Jon Stewart or purposely-dorky Steven Colbert. Then there are the pop stars and Hollywood types frowned on by political conservatives, most of who lean progressive.
I met a teen today whose favorite color is pink and he already has his own clothing line - and his parents are religious conservatives. "I wear only black," he said, "and some think I'm Goth but I'm not because I don't wear makeup." I guess when my son was in theater ten years ago, he had a favorite dress though not gay. In the '70s, I was sent home for too short a skirt., came back wearing a long one of my mom's and was sent home again. I then pointed out that the cheerleaders had even shorter skirts and was told that they were in the school colors. I asked if I could wear anything I wanted if it was in the school colors.
Most of the stories I'm reading occur in places like Atlanta, but apparently this trend toward cross-dressing in high schools is happening all over the country. The New York Times is talking about it now. What does it all mean? (see the two links below the photo)
Reading the articles, it looks like an attempt to blow minds and break dress codes. The "emo" kids, who tend to be androgynous and nontraditional, are also discussed as "getting a lot of grief." This was happening in Mexico and we wrote about it. In the '60s, people used to talk about the "generation gap." In the '80s, punks wanted to "question authority." The last President won a large youth vote with a platform generally oriented toward "change."
