I heard on the drive home that Sam's Club is only selling four bags of rice (jasmine, basmati, long grain) per person and that Costco may follow suit. Restaurants are buying up stocks at wholesalers in anticipation of price hikes, and owners find that bags costing $20 weeks ago are $40 now. At the same time, many types of vegetables have risen by 50% or so. Some foreign residents are even buying large amounts to send to relatives in places like the Philippines, where there is a shortage. Rice-producing countries have limited exports, to keep prices down at home. Rice is still a bargain, but expect to eat at home more.
You are right about rice being a bargain. Rice is sold dry, before cooking. A 50 lb bag of rice that costs $40 (the new price) yields about 150 lb of cooked rice. It's the water the adds the weight.
How much would 150, 1 lb loaves of bread cost?
