Fires started to clear farmland for grazing cattle 100 km or more from Buenos Aires have crippled the city. The airport is closed and people are reporting to doctors with eye, throat, and lung problems. Imagine the chaos if New York City or Tokyo had this problem. Buenos Aires and its immediate vicinity has 13 million inhabitants.
Government spokespersons claim the smoke isn't toxic; it's just carbon monoxide. The government also claims it will prosecute persons responsible for setting fires, if they are caught.
