A local paper reported that 1500 persons participated in a vigil to support Cindy Sheehan, a woman who lost her son in the Iraq war. The right attempts to make Cindy out as a tool of the left and they also state that her main demand is for the US to withdrawl from Iraq immediately. The right is wrong on both accounts.
First, Cindy travelled to Crawford on her own dime and was accompanied by only a few close friends. She was not manipulated by anyone. Second, her request is to have President Bush describe what the noble cause is that resulted in her son's death. Majorie Cohn has an excellent article that describes why Bush won't meet with her to answer this question.
Meanwhile, the large turnout at the Minneapolis vigil and elsewhere throughout the nation shows that the Cindy Sheehan phenomenon represents a change in the tide of poltical thought in the US about administration policies. It isn't JUST an anti-war movement. Middle-class families attended the vigils with their children. They are all wanting and hoping for more sane and thoughtful leadership.
