I am a product of SD schools, Dammit! I learned about the Bible at the Methodist Church and I attended Lk. Poinsett Summer Church Camp. I learned to study and think in school. There was no teaching of the Bible.
This is a definite regression, and SD has already challenged climate change and evolution in their curricula. It is particularly offensive, as my ancestors taught school in SD for generations (grandparents on both sides, parents.) I teach and my son will teach, and my paternal Grandfather was State head of Education. (I have a Master's from University of SD and a PhD from University of WA and my co-blogger is a Professor at U of M.)
South Dakota Advocates Bible Study in Public Schools - Law Blog - WSJ
South Dakota legislators have passed a resolution supporting the teaching of the Bible in public schools. The measure cleared the state Senate on Monday, after passing the S.D. House of Representatives last week, the Rapid City Journal reports.
The resolution calls for schools to offer “non-devotional” elective study of the Bible, stressing its historical and cultural significance, and is meant to “reassure” the school districts that they can teach the Bible without being in violation of the First Amendment, according to RCJ.
The resolution, which can be seen here, also calls on the State Board of Education to “incorporate support for such studies into its curriculum and make all educational bodies in the state aware of textbooks and other materials that have been prepared to teach about the Bible “within the guidelines and context of the First Amendment.”
